First Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) Meeting Held at the Universiti Putra Malaysia

The first JCC Meeting (Joint Coordinating Committee) was held on 15 August 2016 at the Universiti Putra University Malaysia (UPM). The meeting was chaired by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation) UPM, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Azmi Mohd Lila (sitting: 5th from left) and attended by the Project Leader, Prof Dr. T. Toda (sitting: 4th from left), National Project Manager, Malaysian project coordinators, representatives from the JICA Malaysian office, and various ministries in Malaysia and collaborating universities in Japan and Malaysia.

From January 16 to February 17, 2017, Ms. Emi from UNISEL Malaysia, attended a short-term training at the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) to study various techniques on organic matter contents in soil.

Short-term training for Malaysian researchers

Dr. Thilahgavani learns how to operate an HPLC in Soka University

Dr. Thilahgavani, who came from Japan at UMT from 5 to 22 June 2017, provided practical training for the purpose of learning microalgae’s lipid, fatty acid and pigment extraction techniques at Soka University.

A farewell party was held at the end of the training.

Short-term training for Malaysian researchers

From June 26 to July 20, 2017, Dr. Zetty, from University Putra Malaysia to Japan, attended a short-term training at Soka University in high-density culture technology using a microalgal bioreactor.

At the beginning of the training, they introduced each other’s research content and exchanged opinions.

After that, technical training was carried out for microalgae high density culture.

At the end of the training, they held a farewell party.

The first progress announcement meeting on Malaysia side was held at University Putra Malaysia, and a total of 26 people from UPM, UMT and UNISEL attended. (From 09:00 to 17:15)

From 15th to 17th November, 2017, Dr. Katayama explained and demonstrated the analysis method and analysis principle of the provided equipment “Nutrient Auto Analyzer” to Malaysian researchers and graduate students. Ten people participated in this workshop.

Strategic Innovation Creation Program One Visit at UPM

Starting with a greeting from the Director of Institute of Bioscience, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Prof. Dr. Fatimah Md Yusoff, also as the project manager, explained the project outline.

Mr. Kazuo Kuma is the member of the general science and technology innovation conference in Japan. Mr. Teruo Kishi is foreign minister for foreign affairs and science. The purpose of this visit was to introduce the Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Program (SIP) promoting efforts in the Cabinet Office in Japan and international exchange. This program was also attended by program directors of structural materials, infrastructure, and disaster prevention and mitigation, and SIP related to agriculture.

Subsequently, Dr. Nagao, a member of Cosmos-Satreps project, explained about “mass culture of microalgae” which is the main theme of this project and active opinions were exchanged.

Short-term training for Malaysian researchers

Mr. Sulaiman and Fadzli participated from UNISEL in the short-term training held at the National Institute for Environmental Studies and Soka University from 16th January to 13th February 2018. At the National Institute for Environmental Studies, practical training was conducted for “acquisition of techniques for fractionating organic matter dissolved in soil extract and plate culture techniques”.

On the final day, a training result report meeting was held, and Sulaiman and Fadzli presented the results of the training, and many questions came out of the students and lively exchange of ideas.

Short-term training for Malaysian researchers
(Dr. Wong Lilian, University Malaysia Terengganu)

Dr. Lilian who came to Japan from University Malaysia Terengganu was provided with short-term training at Soka University from 13th March to 31st March 2018. In this training, practical training was conducted for the purpose of acquiring life information analysis and microbial community analysis technology.

At the beginning of the training, Dr. Lilian participated in ocean observation and water sampling in Sagami Bay.

Short-term training for Malaysian researchers
(Dr. Fadhil Syukri, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ina Salwany)

From 26 March to 25 April 2018, Dr. Fadhil and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ina who came to Japan from University Putra Malaysia provided with short-term training at Tokyo Institute of Technology.

In this training, practical training was conducted for the purpose of acquiring nutrient salt recovery from shrimp aquaculture pond sludge and microbial community structure analysis technology.

Short-term training for Malaysian researchers
(Dr. Jasnizat, University Malaysia Terengganu)

From 17th May to 31th May 2018, Dr. Jasnizat from University Malaysia Terengganu came to Japan was provided with short-term training at the University of Tokyo.

In this training, practical training was conducted with the aim of acquiring highly efficient screening technology and algal identification technology required to select useful algae from a large number of isolated algal strains.

The 2nd COSMOS Workshop at Universiti Putra Malaysia

The 2nd COSMOS Workshop “Fatty Acid Analysis Using Gas Chromatographic Analysis and Mass Spectrometry (First Edition)” was held at the Institute of Biosciences, University Putra Malaysia, 27th -29th June, 2018 by Soka University’s was done.

On the first day, lectures were given, and on the second and third days, technical instruction was given in the lab, and 10 students were eager to learn the skills.

In 2nd July to 20th July 2018, Dr. Natrah came to Japan from University Putra Malaysia in short-term training program at Soka University for the purpose of “mastering microalgae mass culture technology”.

25th -26th August 2018

Implementation of interim evaluation and field survey by Japan Science and Technology Agency at University Putra Malaysia (UPM)

An interim evaluation and field survey were conducted on 25-26 August, 2018 by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).


First of all, JST team visited the laboratory at Theme 4 at Aquaculture Experimental Station (Pusat Penbenihan Ikan UPM) at Puchong.


Dr. Fadhil (UPM) and Assistant Professor Koyama (Tokyo Tech) explained the experimental procedures and equipment, and the survey began in a peaceful atmosphere.

Next, JST team moved to the main campus of Putra University and visited the theme 3 SATREPS-COSMOS laboratory and the Marine Biotechnology laboratory.


Dr. Nagao (UPM) commented on the improved version of the microalgae mass culture device.


Then, JST team moved to the meeting room and under the chair of Prof. Dr. Fatimah Md. Yusoff (UPM, Project Manager), the research progress briefings for themes 3 and 4 were held.

After the debriefing session, Prof. Dr. Mohd Effendy presenting project that teaches how to cultivate seahorses in nearby poor villages and uses them for the villagers’ income.

The 1st SATREPS-COSMOS International Symposium Session 2


At the beginning, Project leader Professor Toda (Soka Univ.) Gave an overview of COSMOS and its purpose.

Project leader Prof. Dr. Fatimah (UPM) facilitated the session. After that, for each research theme, introduced the research contents and explained their current progress.

In this presentation, various contents were introduced such as educational activities such as the equipment provision to Malaysia, dispatch of Japanese researchers, holding workshops, training of Malaysian researchers in Japan, and cultural exchange in the COSMOS project (For topics on Malaysian training in Japan, please refer to the topics and journals).

Presentation of SATREPS-COSMOS research contents at IPCB 2018

The research contents of SATREPS-COSMOS were presented at 4th International Postgraduate Conference on Biotechnology (IPCB) 2018, held in Terengganu, Malaysia from 27th August to 29th August 2018.


Assistant Professor Oyama of Tokyo Institute of Technology made a presentation on ammonia recovery from aquaculture sludge.


Also, research on microalgal culture under strong light conducted by Malaysian, Tachibana (Master’s Program) at Soka University,


Soka University’s, Ms. Yasuda (Master’s Program) conducted research on isolation and screening of useful microalgae species.


Soka University, Tagawa (Master’s Program) presented a research on the accumulation of useful substances of microalgae.

Mr. Fadzli from UNISEL participated in the short-term training conducted at the National Institute for Environmental Studies from 2th -15th September, 2018.

Holding of SLICE 18 at Selangor University (UNISEL)


SLICE 18 (Selangor Innovation & Creativity Exposition) was held from 14th November at the Shah Alam Campus of Selangor University (UNISEL).


At the exhibition, the UNISEL team of the SATREPS-COSMOS project presented posters, and project member Dr. Shah spoke about his own research.


The exhibition was held mainly by the state of Selangor and its state university, UNISEL, and there were a number of UNISEL booths and several exhibitions from surrounding universities.

The 3rd SATREPS-COSMOS Workshop at UPM

The 3rd SATREPS-COSMOS workshop “Studying method of observation sample of scanning electron microscope by water freeze-drying method” by Dr. Masahiko Shibata of Soka University visiting professor from 22nd to 23rd January 2019 at Institute bioscience of University Putra Malaysia was held.

At the beginning of the workshop, Dr. Shibata gave a lecture on the principle of the water freeze-drying method and the sample preparation method.

Then, practical training on the water freeze-drying method was conducted, and technology transfer was carried out by having the participants go.
